Victoria Field

Victoria Field was born in London in 1963. She grew up mostly in Kent, studied psychology at the University of Sussex and subsequently lectured in that subject at West Cheshire College.

She later joined the British Council and worked in cultural and educational affairs in Istanbul, Moscow and Pakistan and travelled widely and adventurously in those countries. She has an MA in Cultural Policy from the University of Warwick.

She now lives in Cornwall, an almost-island on the edge of Europe, where the wild landscape and the rich culture combine to create a uniquely inspiring environment.

She has always loved poetry and the power of words. Now, as a Certified Poetry Therapist, she is able to combine her interest in psychology with her love of literature. She works using poetry with many different groups and organisations including Lapidus, the US National Association of Poetry Therapy and the National Association of Writers in Education. She was also, for one year, Director of the London-based organisation, Survivors’ Poetry. In 2006, she was given a Pioneer Award by the National Association for Poetry Therapy.

In from Advent 2005, she was writer in residence at Truro Cathedral and her collection based on her time there was published in November 2006. She has won many prizes for her writing, including the bloc online prize for an unpublished novel extract and Opening Lines for new dramatic writing. Hall for Cornwall produced her prize-winnning play, Blood and subsequently commissioned and toured, Glass Heart (2006).

Her poems have been widely published in magazines including Haiku Quarterly, Poetry London, Poetry Wales, The North, Quadrant and Staple and been placed in many competitions, including most recently third prize in the 2007 Strokestown International competition in Ireland.

She has co-edited two books on therapeutic writing Writing Works (with Gillie Bolton and Kate Thompson) published by JKP in 2006 and Prompted to Write (with Zeeba Ansari) published by fal in 2007.
