Hannah Cumming

Hannah Cumming has written stories and made pictures for as long as she can remember. Before beginning her degree her paintings had strong narrative undertones and often included text. While living in Malaysia in 2002, teaching at a primary school, she realised how important communicating children is- and how challenging (she didn't speak much Malay so often had to draw everything on the blackboard!). She now really appreciates how pictures and stories affect children's understanding, imagination and development.

Once the idea of making books dawned on her, Hannah applied and got on to the internationally renowned Illustration course at Falmouth University College.

She developed invaluable skills and understanding from her time and tutors at Falmouth, undertaking small commissions while she studied. She had work exhibited and sold in London, and won Highly Commended at The Macmillan Children's Book prize twice, for two of the books she made at college. She graduated in summer 2007 with first class honours.
